KMT Rally in Hualien Sees Shoving and Scuffles Outside the Venue

Aug 15, 2026

The KMT held a rally in Hualien in support of its county magistrate candidate, Yu Shu-chen. The event drew a lively crowd, but shoving and scuffles broke out outside the venue, striking a discordant note in the blue camp's pre-election mobilisation.

  • Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an led a delegation to Hualien, and several blue-camp legislators took turns appearing on stage in support of county magistrate candidate Yu Shu-chen.
  • The event centred on the theme "The whole nation topples the cabinet, united as one," casting Yu Shu-chen as an "iron-man magistrate" who has toiled at the grassroots for 30 years.
  • As Legislator Fu Kun-chi was speaking, a member of the public surnamed Chen shouted "CCP lackeys" outside the venue and tried to force his way in to protest, only to be surrounded by staff.
  • The two sides pushed and shoved, and Chen fell to the ground, complaining that his glasses had been broken; the blue camp said this was an internal party event not open to the public and that the man had intended to create chaos.

Outlook: With the blue camp going all out to get out the vote in the Hualien magistrate race, the protest episode is expected to become a talking point in the long-distance sparring between the blue and green camps.
