Taiwan's two biggest city mayors are pressing the central government to prepare for the Trump–Xi summit, a sign Taipei fears its interests could be traded away.
- Trump is hosting Xi Jinping at the White House during a three-day visit, with talks expected to touch on issues that affect Taiwan.
- Taipei mayor Chiang Wan-an wants President Lai Ching-te and his security team to track the talks closely and ready a response plan.
- Taichung mayor Lu Shiu-yen is calling for a full national security meeting chaired by the president, with defense, foreign affairs, finance, economy and China policy chiefs all present.
- She also wants cabinet ministers to stay in Taipei over the Mid-Autumn holiday instead of travelling, so they are on hand if something breaks.
- Both are opposition-aligned mayors, so the pressure is political as well as practical.
Outlook: Taiwan will be watching for any language on its status coming out of the summit, and the government is likely to face more pressure to convene its security council.
