Taiwan's UK Deputy Representative Promotes Tech and Trade Ties at Greater Lincolnshire Forum
Taiwan deepened a grassroots diplomatic and economic tie with the UK, a mildly positive development for Taiwan's efforts to build international partnerships outside formal diplomatic channels.
Tainan and England's Greater Lincolnshire region formally became sister cities, the first such local-government partnership ever between Taiwan and the UK. Taiwan's deputy representative in London joined a related forum to pitch Taiwan's tech and trade strengths to an international audience.
She pointed to Taiwan's semiconductor industry as proof that a country with few natural resources can still build a world-leading tech sector by investing heavily in skilled talent, and argued Taiwan's open, rule-of-law-based economy makes it a reliable partner for other democracies.
A Texas state lawmaker who also spoke at the forum said she was impressed by Taiwan's tech sector, and Taiwan's representative floated the idea of Texas cities joining the partnership too. Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who visited Taiwan in 2023, also spoke at the event's closing.
Outlook: Expect Taiwan to keep using city-level and regional partnerships like this one to build economic and political goodwill in the UK and US even without formal diplomatic recognition.
