Myanmar's new anti-scam law carries the death penalty, Taiwan warns

Sep 07, 2026

Southeast Asia is cracking down hard on foreigners working in online scam operations, and Taiwanese nationals lured there now face prison or worse.

  • Myanmar's new anti-scam law took effect at the end of July and allows the death penalty for online fraud, torture inside scam compounds, and crypto crimes.
  • The law applies to foreigners, so scam workers will no longer be let off with light immigration charges or simple deportation.
  • Three Taiwanese have already been arrested and charged in Myanmar under the crackdown.
  • Thailand now deports and can permanently bar foreigners convicted of illegal entry, overstaying, or working without permission.
  • Thailand is also cutting visa-free stays for Taiwan and 59 other countries from 60 days to 30 days starting September 15.

Outlook: Expect more arrests as regional governments keep tightening enforcement, and travel to the area will get more restricted.
