Crews clearing Farrington Highway after storm Lowell

Sep 08, 2026

Storm damage has left the main road along Oahu's Waianae Coast partly blocked, which is bad news for residents facing long delays and closures.

  • High surf, strong winds and rain pushed sand, rocks and tree branches across Farrington Highway overnight.
  • Only local traffic is being let through, moving slowly under contraflow, and a traffic light is out at Lualualei Naval Road.
  • Farrington is the main way in and out of the Waianae Coast, so any closure cuts the area off.
  • Waves were strong enough to shove heavy concrete parking barriers across a lot near Ko Olina, and the surf is still washing over the shoreline.

Outlook: Cleanup will continue through the day with slow traffic expected, and people are being asked to stay home if they can.
