Chinese coast guard ship enters Pratas Island restricted waters

Sep 07, 2026

A Chinese coast guard vessel pushed into Taiwan-controlled waters around Pratas Island on Sunday morning and was met by a Taiwanese patrol ship, in a standoff that is still going on.

  • Taiwan's coast guard spotted the Chinese ship before dawn, sent a cutter to intercept, and ordered it out in Chinese and English.
  • This is the 12th time this year Taiwan has driven a Chinese coast guard ship out of the Pratas area.
  • Over the radio the Chinese crew called the island part of "China's Taiwan" and warned Taiwan would pay a heavy price unless it accepted the "one China" principle.
  • Taiwan's side answered that it is a sovereign state and accused Beijing of faking law enforcement to manufacture a claim of jurisdiction.
  • Taiwan's crew also warned that a clash in the Taiwan Strait would hit the global economy and the chip industry, and bring sanctions on China.

Outlook: Expect these incursions to keep coming as Beijing builds a routine presence around Taiwan's outlying islands.
