YMCA of Honolulu expands programs for kūpuna
Hawaii's YMCA branches are pushing new programs aimed at older adults, a positive for seniors looking for cheap ways to stay active and connected.
- Older adults now make up about a quarter of Honolulu's population, and that share keeps growing.
- Programs run from heated pools and arthritis-friendly water classes to pickleball, bingo, and a garden club.
- A food-and-fun program with the city and Hawaii Meals on Wheels serves hot meals at six locations three days a week.
- Brain-and-body "dual tasking" exercises are being added to slow memory decline, in partnership with Brain Matters Hawaii.
- Costs are covered in part by donations, including $100,000 from the Chan Foundation, plus financial aid for those who qualify.
Outlook: September is Welcoming Month, with joining fees waived and a free month for new members.
