Taiwan's Penghu county magistrate race has become unusually crowded, with five candidates now registered ahead of the November 28 vote.

• Ocean conservation volunteer Chen Chin-chuan registered on his own on September 3, running without a party behind him.
• He joined KMT candidate Chen Chen-chung, Taiwan Solidarity Union chair Chou Ni-an, and former deputy magistrate Hsu Chih-fu, all of whom signed up the same day.
• DPP candidate Wu Shu-chin registered a day earlier, bringing the field to five.
• Registration closes September 4, and former Magong mayor Yeh Chu-lin is expected to file that morning, which would make it six.

Outlook: The field could grow by one more before the deadline, setting up a fragmented race where a winner may need only a small share of the vote.
