China detained and questioned a Taiwanese man for six hours over his old job at a human rights group, a chilling sign for Taiwanese travelers and civil society.

• The man was held at the Shanghai border and asked about his part-time work for Amnesty International Taiwan, then gave up on entering China and flew home the same night.
• Questions covered China, Hong Kong, the Uyghurs and Tibet, plus who he knew among politicians and activists.
