Taiwan's most-watched local race is tightening, and the latest numbers are bad news for the ruling DPP in its biggest voter stronghold.

• A TVBS poll commissioned by the KMT caucus puts Lee Si-chuan at 39.8% against DPP candidate Su Chiao-hui's 33.1%.
• Su brushed off the gap while registering her run, saying she won't attack pollsters when she's behind or mock opponents when she's ahead.
• Other polls tell a different story — one has Su narrowly ahead for the first time, well inside the margin of error, so the race is effectively tied.
• Su registered alongside 36 city council candidates on a pitch that New Taipei should stop being a satellite of Taipei.
• Lee has lined up outgoing mayor Hou Yu-ih as his campaign chairman, and Su has been praising Hou's record rather than attacking it.

Outlook: Registration closes this week and the vote is 90 days out, with New Taipei likely to stay a coin-flip race between two candidates both running on continuity.
