Registration for the year-end elections in Miaoli County has officially heated up. The main talking point is the four-way scramble for Miaoli City mayor, while for the small New Power Party the vote is a hard-fought battle to hold on to its turf.

• Kuomintang incumbent mayor Yu Wen-chung is seeking re-election, and the Democratic Progressive Party has put forward at-large legislator Lin Yueh-chin, who grew up in Miaoli, to challenge him.
• The New Power Party's only seat on the Miaoli County Council faces a test: the incumbent councillor is instead standing for mayor of Zhunan Township, and their office director is taking over as the party's candidate.
• The New Power Party has no factional backing or local vote brokers in the area and can rely only on voter support, leaving it in a relatively difficult position.
• Registration day fell on an auspicious date, and more than 400 people in Miaoli County completed registration for public offices at all levels in a single day.
