Kaohsiung and Arizona launch silicon photonics center

Sep 01, 2026

Taiwan and the US are deepening chip cooperation with a new joint research center in Kaohsiung, good news for Taiwan's push to stay ahead in AI hardware.

  • Kaohsiung's city government teamed up with Arizona partners to open SPARK, a silicon photonics center.
  • The focus is silicon photonics, advanced packaging, training engineers, and industry-university projects.
  • AI data centers need much faster connections between chips, and light-based chip links are the answer the industry is betting on.
  • Kaohsiung already hosts TSMC's 2-nanometer production and expanding ASE packaging plants, giving the center a ready-made industry base.
  • Arizona brings optics research muscle through the University of Arizona, plus state and local backing from Tucson and Pima County.

Outlook: Expect silicon photonics to be a headline theme at next year's SEMICON Taiwan as the technology moves from labs toward mass production.
