Trump's cheap-gas showcase in Philadelphia turns out to be built on fuel a supplier says was never paid for — bad for the credibility of the whole stunt, and a reminder that gas prices are still driven by the Iran war.

• A supplier, Mansfield Energy, is suing New Jersey company KRSM for taking 1.1 million gallons of fuel worth $4 million and paying nothing for it.
• KRSM sold that fuel to Freedom Fuel stations, the network Trump promoted in July as leading the charge on lower gas prices.
• The discount was only about 50 cents a gallon, only in the Philadelphia area, and prices there have already climbed back to normal.
• KRSM's owners were ordered in February to pay a fuel supplier over $600,000 over near-identical theft claims; they call the new case a paperwork mix-up.
• Gas got expensive in the first place because of the Iran war, and a two-state discount stunt was never going to offset that.

Outlook: The case still has to be proven in court, but with a matching judgment already on the record, expect the "freedom fuel" branding to quietly disappear.
